OBEST® Portable Mini Breathalyzer LCD Display Digital Breath Alcohol Tester Review

The breathalyzer is made from plastic but feels pretty sturdy and pretty well-built. It feelspretty ligh without any batteries in it. This runs off of two AAA batteries that you must supply. I amusing rechargeable batteries because they seem to last longer when things are sitting around not beingused and I don’t see anyone using this all the time but I want it ready when I need it. It also comes with a user manual but no carrying case like another one I have does.

Each time you turn this on it has to clear the sensor and it counts down from 15 before you can use it. It then immediately counts down from ten and you are to blow in the mouthpiece during this time. The longer and harder you blow, the more accurate this should be.

I was a little skeptical about these devices and never really trusted the ones the police use (had to use one a couple of times in the past). There are a lot of things that have to happen or not happen to make these work and be accurate (wait 20 min after you last drink and don’t belch during that time, have to blow for 8-10 seconds, have to blow hard and long enough that it beeps, did you eat before or during, your weight, etc.).

I went to a drinking test that our local police (I am friends with some of them) were having, where you drank a beer or shot an hour and then they tested you each half hour. That was enlightening and good to know how you react to drinking, what your BAC is while doing it and how fast it rises with each drink based on how fast or how many you drink.

I wanted this breathalyzer because everyone I hang around, plus myself are pretty big drinkers and we all think we are ok to drive. I thought this may be good enough for us all to see that maybe we shouldn’t drive and start taking taxis or Uber. A couple of them already have one DUI.

Thought I would do my test the same way we did at the police station. One beer or shot an hour with testing each half hour. I tried to do and eat the same way as before the last test and my results were pretty close to what the police had during their testing. This may be off a little on the high side (which is better than the low side), but that could be anyone of the reasons I mentioned above. I have a high tolerance for alcohol and it doesn’t seem to bother me as much but my BAC still goes up and gets too high to be legally driving and that is all that matters.

You really do need to wait after your last drink before using this. If you blow in this during or right after drinking. You will blow some stupidly high number that you know isn’t true. After drinking at golf and having five beers I blew .085. After getting home 45 minutes later, I blew a .05. So that seems to be about right to me.

Just like the other one I have , I think this is good enough to tell anyone where they stand on their BAC if used correctly, but take that with a grain of salt and don’t drive if you are even close and use a little common sense. It’s still just a tool and a machine and isn’t flawless. In the smoky bar it worked the first time, but then when I turned it on again it just kept going thru the warm up period over and over until it turned itself off. It did work again once I got home. Guess it doesn’t like all the smoke and couldn’t clear the sensor?
