Wavlink USB 3.0 to SATA Single Bay External Hard Drive Docking Station Review

The Wavlink USB 3.0 to SATA Single Bay External Hard Drive Docking Station is something I have been needing for months since my two drive docking station died. It was a hard blow when my external docking station stopped working.  I really wanted something like that again, but just can’t afford those and ended up getting this instead.

This is an open plastic docking station that acts like any other external hard drive and requires no software or installation to make work. Plug the power cord into this and the wall,  plug this into your USB 3 port on your computer (or USB 2 if needed), insert your SATA hard drive into it and turn it on. Your computer will recognize it and assign it a drive letter and then you can use this just like any other drive.

This docking station is a little bigger and taller than others that I have. This isn’t a bad thing and maybe better as it may not tip over like some of the others could with the drive making these a little top-heavy. There is a LED power light on the front to tell you it has power and is on and an on/off switch on the back. Please make sure the unit is off before inserting or removing a hard drive so you don’t corrupt any data when doing so. Also, make sure the drive has stopped spinning so the arm in it doesn’t hit the spinning platter inside and damage the drive. Also, beware that the drive could be hot after being used for a long period of time.

I am back in the game and backing up my computers again and am so happy with this thing. It just works. I keep it turned off when not in use so no virus or ransomware can get to it during normal operations of our computers unless I need to do backups, need something off the drive or save something to the drive. You just never know what will happen these days and I will have a backup now in case it does.

The USB 3.0 is so much nicer and faster than the older 2.0, so if you have one on your computer, use it. The transfer speeds are so much faster and things just take less time to work now.

On a side note. If your computer doesn’t recognize this when you plug it in and turn it on, it maybe the data cable between the drive and the USB plug. I had another drive like this and that happened to me. The company sent a new cable and all is well.

If I had any complaint, it would be the USB cable and power cord could be longer so I could plug this into my router and have it sit on top of my computer center next to my router.
